As you have likely heard by now, Donald Trump has introduced new tariffs on imports, and there is much discussion about the impact this could have on the Global South.  These “reciprocal” rates will have an especially harsh impact on developing countries. For example, India now faces a 27% tariff, while Cambodia and Sri Lanka were hit with 49% and 44% respectively. South Africa has been struck with a 31% duty, and Lesotho has been hit the hardest, with a whopping 50%. What you need to know:

  • The ripple effects demonstrate how much global growth still relies on US consumption even though China is now a top export destination for so much of the world.

  • Impact on US-Africa trade: Experts say the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) framework which saw African countries export duty free to the US is as good as dead.

  • Reclaiming agency in Asia: China, South Korea and Japan held their first economic dialogue in five years last week to discuss growing regional trade.

  • Tariff exemptions: The blow has been reduced for countries like India, Singapore and Japan due to tariff exemptions for their key manufacturing sectors with substantial exports to the US (like pharmaceuticals and semiconductors).
